RR – island hopping in Istria and the Kvarner regi
A week of island hopping by bicycle. However, first we explore the peninsula of Istria, the eastern and the southern part. But then we hop to four different islands: Losinj, Pag, Rab and Krk.
Saturday: Boarding between 11.30 am and 1.00 pm in het port of Rijeka. Soon afterwards we will set sail for the peninsula of Istria. In the bay of Plomin we unload the bicycles for the first trail of the week. It goes slowly up hill to Krsan, Nedescina and Vinez and will then reach Labin, the center of east Istria. From there it goes via serpentines down to Rabac, a holiday destination well known because of its beautiful pebbled beach. Dinner and overnight stay in the port of Rabac. (ca. 22 km) Sunday: After breakfast the ship heads for the little fishing village Krnicka Luka. From there we cycle via Krnica and Marcana to Vodnjan. This place is known because of the bells of the church of Saint Blaz, with the highst tower (62m) of Istria. From Vodnjan we continue over Galizana and Veli Vrh to the city of Pula. We see the 3000 year old amphitheatre and go on passing by Banjole to Pomer into the bay of Medulin. Here we are in the very southern end of Istria. The boat is already waiting for us. During the cycling trip we have taken time for lunch. Dinner and night in the port of Pomer (ca. 44 km). Monday: we leave Istria and pass by the islands Unije and Cres and head for the island Losinj. Today’s cycle tour starts in Osor, where a swingbridge connects the islands Losinj and Cres. After lunch on board we cycle from Osor via Nerezine and Mali Losinj to the picturesque location of Veli Losinj, to end up in the port of Mali Losinj, the place where we stay the night. (ca. 37 km) Tuesday: this day will give us a some longer sailing, because the trip over sea from Mali Losinj to Lovalja on the isle of Pag, takes about four hours. On the way we will anchor for lunch and a swim. The island Pag is enchanting by its contrasts - while some places resemble a lunar landscape elsewhere we encounter rich meadows of aromatic herbs where numerous sheep herds graze, their milk used as the base for the famous Pag cheese. Cycling across the northern part of the island we reach Lun where we’ll meet our ship again. We put the bicycles back on board and sail to the isle of Rab. Overnight stay in the harbour of Rab. (ca. 20 km) Wednesday: we make a short cycle tour around the city of Rab. After a lunch break we head for Lopar in the north of the island, known for its 2 km sandy ‘Paradise beach’ which softly slopes down into the sea, and famous for another 22 sand beaches in the bays around. After having loaded the bikes on board we leave the island Rab and sail to Krk, the largest Adriatic island of Croatia. In the late afternoon we will arrive in the harbour of Krk, our place for dinner and over night. (ca. 37 km) Thursday: We bicycle to Dobrinj in the centre of the island and then on to the old little city of Vrbnik, a well located place on a high rock at the east coast. From the vineyards here comes the famous ‘golden’ wine named Zlahtina. After lunch break we cycle on to Punat and back to our boat in Krk, where we have dinner and overnight. (ca. 33 km) Friday: Today will be our last cycling tour, from Krk via Sveti Anton to Malinska located in a secluded bay on the west coast. After we load the bikes we set sail for a near by bay for the last refreshing swim in the Adriatic. We then sail back to our starting point Rijeka and say goodbye to this world of islands. We enjoy dinner in Rijeka and will stay the night on board. (ca. 22 km) Saturday: After breakfast disembarkation (until 9.00 am)
