Trogir

Trogir's historic town centre has been recognized as an UNESCO world-heritage site because of its beauty and high cultural value. The historic city is situated on an island between the mainland and the island of Ciovo. Taking a walk through the streets of Trogir is almost like travelling back in time, to the period of the Greeks, Romans and Venetians - all of which have left their won, unique trace on the breath-taking architecture of this beautiful city. In the historic centre of Trogir, nearly every house boasts its own, characteristic style. Many palaces and houses have remained well preserved, and most date back to the 13th century, as do many of the churches. At the south side of the city you can find remainder of the medieval stone wall and towers, the majority of which was destroyed in the 19th century. What has also remained well preserved is a balcony which is located directly next to the southern port, and which was used for shelter by travellers who found themselves locked out of the city late at night. By the northern entrance you can find a statue of St John. The dwelling of Kamerlengo is situated in the south-western part of the city, and dates back to the 15th century. It was used as a barrack for the Venetian army, and owes its name to Kamerlengo (Camerariusu), a Venetian civil servants who was in charge of its finances. Nowadays, the dwelling is used as a summer podium. On the other side of town you can find the tower of St Mark, which was originally connected with Kamerlengo, with the purpose of protecting the city from attacks by the Ottomans. Situated in the eastern part of the city, on the main square, you can find a cathedral, the town hall, main loggia (which was used as a court), and the country house of the aristocratic family Cipiko. The entrance into the cathedral of St. Lawrence (better known as the cathedral of St John) is decorated with a Roman portal, a master piece of one of Croatia's greatest sculptors, Radovan, dating back to 1240. Images of the birth of Jesus and his life are depicted on the portal. Inside the cathedral you can find works of Andrija Alesi, Nikola Firentinac, Ivan Duknovic and many other artists. In the city centre you can also find the church of St Barbara (the oldest of the preserved churches), a mini-basilica dating back to the 11th century, St Peter's church (part of the Monastery of St Peter), a Dominican monastery St Dominic and the monastery of St Nicholas with a museum.
