Supetar is a picturesque town, built in typical Mediterranean style, situated on the north-western coast of the island of Brac. The centre of the town, with its long history and numerous monuments, has a long history of tourism. The town is easily reachable from Split by the ferryboat which departs every hour, and it is also very well connected by bus with Bol and its famous beach “The golden horn”. Supetar has been inhabited since ancient times, but the actual settlement began in the 16th century. The town was born as the port of Nerezisce, the former centre of the island, and on the 16th February 1830 Supetar officially became the capital of the island. The most famous monuments in Supetar are the church in baroque style with its monumental stairway built in the year 1733, the precious paintings of the master Felix Tironi from Supetar from the 18th century, the decorated well near the graveyard and the numerous monuments created by Ivan Rendic, a famous sculptor from the island of Brac. In the nearby cave Kapacina we can find the remains of an ancient Roman swimmingpool and in the small church of Saint Nicolaus there is an ancient Christian sarcophagus. Nowadays Supetar is a modern tourist resort, with a variety of hotels and apartments, and beautiful pebble beaches.
