Pag - Island of Pag - Northern Dalmatia
The town of Pag was mentioned for the first time in the X century. The church of Saint Maria was built in the year 1192 and still dominates in the area of the old part of town. During the time of King Bela IV the city of Pag obtained the status of a free city and still today the king’s original seal is preserved, on a printed stamp dated 30 March 1244. Tourism started to develop gradually from the beginning of the 1960’s. Further cultural monuments worth seeing are the courthouse, the bishop’s palace, St. George’s church, the Franciscan church, the church of Saint Magdalene and others. The famous lace of Pag comes from the southern part of the Mediterranean. Its characteristic detail distinguishes it from others. It is made without samples or prototypes and reflects, in its designs, the life and traditions of the region. You will be able to acquire lace directly from the women in Pag, who sew in the summer time in front of their houses. Many families from Pag still retain this ancient traditional custom inherited from their grandfathers or recreated on the basis of ancient models. The dresses are of great value and demonstrate how important the tradition for the island people is. The custom was born during the Venetian domination and still maintains today its traditional design.Beyond its artistic beauties and culinary specialties, the island offers also an active night life, on the beach at "Zrce" and nearby Novalja, with entertainment for young people, day and night! Cyclists and lovers of the mountain will also find this to be their ideal place.
Excursions available: National Park Paklenica, National Park Krka, National Park Kornati islands, Zrmanja river canoe safari, jeep safari to the “Winnetou” location.
